Softball Opens SAA Play with Saturday Tripleheader

3/1/2019 3:03:00 PM

JACKSON, Miss.—The Millsaps softball team opens their 2019 slate Saturday and thanks to the impending rainy weather, they'll play three.

The Majors will welcome the Warriors of Hendrix College to the Millsaps Softball Complex on Saturday for a tripleheader, making sure they get all three conference games in this weekend.

Millsaps enters SAA play with a 3-7 record, opening the season at the Abilene Round Robin Tournament in Texas. After dropping the first two games of the weekend, they rebounded with a win over Austin before falling to Hardin-Simmons to end their time in Texas. They dropped a pair to Louisiana College the next weekend before sweeping Centenary, outscoring the Ladies 21-7 over the two games. They opened their home slate by dropping a pair of close games to Huntingdon.

The Majors offense is led by Lindsey Osbon, who is hitting .379 on the young season with a pair of double to go with a pair of RBIs. Mackenzie Johnson, Jordan Lipari, Karlie Galloway and Kendall Carder are all hitting over .300 while Lipari and Galloway are tied for the team lead with nine RBIs each. Freshman Ty Bergeron has the team's only homerun, a two-run shot in the first game against Huntingdon.

Amber Funderburk is the Majors ace on the mound so far, sitting at 1-2 with a 3.68 ERA in 14.2 innings. She has eight strikeouts in her three games. Karley Williams is coming off a phenomenal start against Huntingdon, pitching 6.1 innings and giving up just two earned runs while striking out a career-high 10.

Saturday

Hendrix College Warriors  (5-1, 0-0 SAA) Game One: 10:00 AM) Millsaps Softball Complex

The Majors will start their regular season the way they ended 2018, taking on Hendrix. The Warriors come in at 5-1, opening the season by winning three straight and having won their last two. Their offense averages nine runs a game while their pitching staff is only giving up 3.8 runs/game.

Key Players for Hendrix
  • Karli Sewell-The Warrior senior has at least one hit in all six of Hendrix's games, hitting a blistering .571 to start 2019. She has seven extra base hits and leads the team in RBIs with 13.
  • Jaydan Hunt-Hunt also has seven extra base hits to pace the Warriors, including five triples. Anytime she's on base, she's a speed threat as she has five stolen bases on five attempts and has scored 13 runs.
  • Hailey Johnston-Johnston has two starts on the mound for Hendrix, sporting a 2-0 record with a 1.13 ERA. She's given up just one earned run while striking out five.
The Majors and Warriors met four times last season with Hendrix sweeping Millsaps in the regular season before handing Millsaps a loss in the first round of the SAA tournament.
