ORLANDO, Fla. -- On Monday, the Millsaps College women's tennis team played a pair of spring break matches in Florida. The Majors dropped the first match up of the day to No. 29 Case Western Reserve University, but rebounded in the nightcap to knock off Franklin & Marshall College 8-1.
Millsaps now holds an 8-2 overall record on the season.
#29 Case Western Reserve University
The Spartans captured a 2-1 lead after winning a pair of tiebreakers in doubles play. For Millsaps, the No. 2 team of
Ella Shields and
Morris Kelly Clayton controlled their match from start to finish en route to an 8-2 win.
Case Western continued their momentum into singles play winning 5 of the 6 matches. After falling behind
Maggie Dabadie fought back winning the second set and forcing a tiebreaker in the 3rd.
It was
Jillian Sandoz who cruised in a two-set victory at singles No. 6 to earn the second point of the match for the Majors.
Franklin & Marshall College
The second match of the day saw the singles play first.
Marissa Brown and
Jordyn Kanak came out strong in the early going to capture a pair of wins at No. 4 and No. 6 to get things going for Millsaps.
At No. 1
Grace Gaskins was back and forth in the early going, but she was able to close out both sets late for the 6-3, 6-4 victory. Sandoz picked up her second win of the day at No. 5 to clinch for the Majors 5-1.
In doubles play the No. 2 team of Shields and Clayton got up early and cruised to an 8-1 win. Gaskins and Dabadie scored an 8-5 win at No. 1, while the combination of
Tori Barbier and
Camille Landry won a tightly contested victory at No. 3 to close things out for the Majors.
What's Next?
The Majors have Tuesday off but will be back in action on Wednesday when they take on Swartmore College. Matches are scheduled to begin play at 7:00 a.m. CT
