JACKSON, Miss. -- The Millsaps College baseball team was back at Twenty Field at Tuesday night for their final home midweek contest of the 2019 season. The Majors welcomed cross-town rival Belhaven to campus for the second game of the 2019 Cowboy Maloney Series.
The Blazers used a five-run top of the 6th inning to help propel them to the 8-5 win. With the victory, Belhaven clinches the 2019 Cowboy Maloney Series.
How It Happened
The Blazers put a run on the board in the top of the 1st on a wild pitch, and they added a pair of runs in the 3rd to stretch their lead out to 3-0.
After
Conner Haynes pitched a scoreless top of the 4th inning, sophomore
Christian Cooper led off the bottom half of the inning with a solo home run to cut the deficit to 3-1.
Taylor Sullivan entered from the bullpen for the 5th and turned in a three-up, three-down outing which allowed the offense to go to work in the bottom of the inning.
William Warner led off with a double to right, and
Jimmy Johnstone followed with a bunt single to put runners on the corners. With
Brennan Ducote at the plate, Warner scored on a passed ball and Johnstone advanced to second. A productive out from Ducote allowed Johnstone to move to third, and he was brought home on a
Mason Little RBI groundout.
All told, the game was tied 3-3 after 5 complete innings.
Unfortunately, things unraveled for the Majors in the top of the 6th. The Blazers plated 5 runs on 3 hits and 2 errors in the inning to move ahead 8-3.
Millsaps chipped away however, scoring a run in the 7th on a double-steal to make it 8-4.
The bullpen held Belhaven scoreless over the final three innings, and the Majors got the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the 9th. One run was all Millsaps would get unfortunately, when Little scored on a
Jon Dale Dieckman pinch-hit single, and the Blazers held on for the 8-5 win.
Key Contributors
Little led the offense with 3 hits. He had 1 RBI and also scored a run. Both Johnstone and Cooper had a pair of hits as well.
8 different players made an appearance on the mound for Millsaps. Haynes, Sullivan,
Jackson Russo and
Jimmy Fondren all kept the Blazers off of the scoreboard. It was Haynes who worked around a single to strike out the side in the top of the 4th inning.
