Track and Field Have Strong Showing to Open 2019 Outdoor Season

CLINTON, Miss.—The Majors men's and women's track and field teams opened their 2019 outdoor season Saturday at the Mississippi College Season opener. Multiple performers won their events while personal and school records were broken throughout the day. 
 
Women
 
In the field events, Payton Passantino picked up where she left off last season, taking down 10 other competitors en route to winning the javelin throw with a distance of 35.45 meters. Also in the field events, Sydney Mann finished third in the pole vault, clearing a height of 2.74 meters. 
 
Shelby Wilson, who had a very successful indoor season for the Majors, tied for third in the high jump with a height of 1.57 meters while Essence Davis finished seventh with a jump of 1.52 meters.  
 
The women's track side also had a strong day that saw multiple high finishers. 
 
Abby Tew ran a phenomenal race in the 5000 meters, finishing third with a personal best time of 19:02.62, smashing the seven-year-old school record by almost 17 seconds. Lily Pudlik and Miranda Gaupp also had top-10 finishes in the 5000 meters. 
 
Carolina Teague had a top-20 finish in the 200-meter dash, finishing with a time of 27.54. 
 
Men
 
On the men's side, it was the throwers that had the strongest days for the Majors. 
 
Asael Hernandez-Loredo had himself a banner day, winning the hammer throw with a distance of 46.39 meters, coming in fourth in the discus with a top throw of 39.82 meters and finishing seventh in the shot put with a throw of 12.08 meters. Trevion Robertson also had a strong day in the shot put, finishing 11th with a distance of 111.88 meters. 
 
In the track events, Landon Wimberley had a top-20 finish in the 200-meter dash, crossing the finish line with a time of 23.38.
