Baseball Picks up 10-7 Midweek Win at Centenary

SHREVEPORT, La. -- The Millsaps College baseball team traveled to Louisiana on Wednesday evening to wrap up a three-game season series with the Gents of Centenary College. Centenary won the previous two meetings this season, both played in Jackson.

In tonight's final matchup of the season between these two teams the Majors came back from a 3-1 deficit to earn a 10-7 win.

Millsaps, who has now won two out of their last three games, improves their record to 5-18 overall with the win. The loss drops the Gents to 12-14-1 this season.

How It Happened
After a quiet first inning for both teams, the Majors offense got on the scoreboard in the top of the 2nd.

William Warner put a ball in play that Centenary was unable to field cleanly, Jackson Hailey came home to score on the play to give Millsaps the 1-0 advantage.

Centenary answered with three runs in their half of the 2nd, but after the Majors responded with three runs of their own in the top of the 3rd they never trailed for the rest of the game.

In the top of the 3rd Mason Little reached on an error by the left fielder. Alan Merkle, who had walked to lead off the inning, and Jimmy Johnstone, who had reached on an earlier error, both came in to score on the play to make it 3-3. After a Centenary pitching change Jimmy Fondren came through with a sacrfice fly that scored Brennan Ducote and gave the Majors a 4-3 lead.

The Gents responded with run in the bottom half to tie things up, but Millsaps got that run right back in the top of the 4th on a Johnstone RBI groundout.

Both teams went scoreless in the 5th, but the top of the 6th inning is when the Majors took control of the game.

The offense exploded for five runs on six hits to grab a 10-4 lead.

In the inning Little had a pair of RBIs on a double. Keaton Page, Nathan Chilton and Fondren also added RBIs for Millsaps.

Centenary tried to come back in the 6th as they plated three runs, but the Majors bullpen held on for the final three innings to secure the 10-7 lead.

Taylor Sullivan, who pitched a scoreless 5th inning, picked up the win on the mound for the Majors. Zach Kodra, Jackson Russo and Langston Haden combined to throw the final 3.1 innings allowing no hits. Haden was credited with his first save of the season.
