JACKSON, Miss. -- The Millsaps College baseball team returned to Twenty Field on Saturday afternoon for a Southern Athletic Association (SAA) doubleheader with the Warriors of Hendrix College.
Hendrix, which entered this weekend at second place in the league standings, used a combination of strong pitching and timely hitting to sweep the doubleheader from the Majors. The Warriors won game one 11-2, and finished the day with a 12-2 win in game two.
With the losses the Millsaps record falls to 5-20 overall and 2-8 in conference play this year. Hendrix improves to 21-7 overall. They now sit atop the SAA standings with an 8-3 conference record.
Game 1
The Warriors plated a run in the top of the 1st inning to get things going. They then added three in the 3rd and two in the 4th to take a 6-0 lead.
Hayden Williams entered the game from the bullpen in the top of the 5th and he quieted the Hendrix bats for the better part of 4 innings.
Unfortunately, it took until the bottom of the 8th inning for the Millsaps offense to get on the scoreboard. Until
Christian Cooper came through with a 2-RBI single in the 8th, the Warrior pitching staff had done a good job of scattering the Majors hits around.
Those two runs proved to be the only ones Millsaps would score in game one. In the top of the 9th, Hendrix added five more runs to their total and held on in the bottom half of the inning to secure the 12-2 win.
Key Contributors
Cooper finished as the only player with a multi-hit game, while
Jimmy Fondren and
Keaton Page each doubled for Millsaps.
On the mound the final line for Williams showed 4.1 innings pitched, allowing just two hits and two earned runs.
Game 2
The Warriors picked right up where they left off in the second game. They opened things up by scoring three runs in the top of the 1st.
Millsaps answered back in the 2nd with a
William Warner RBI single, but Hendrix got that run right back in the 3rd. They then added a run in the 4th, and tallied seven runs in the 6th to take a commanding 12-1 lead.
The Majors scored in the bottom of the 7th when
Chris Hart pinch hit and doubled to bring home
Brennan Ducote, but the deficit proved to be too much to overcome.
Key Contributors
Ducote totaled three hits in the game including a double. Warner added a pair of hits and a RBI for Millsaps.
