Track and Field Teams Have Strong Day in Birmingham

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Majors men's and women's track and field teams continued their strong spring on Saturday at the Hilltop Classic in Birmingham, Alabama. 
 
Both teams had multiple top-five individual finishers as well as successful team placements. The women's team finished fifth with 76 points while the men's team finished fourth with 112 points. Cumberland won both team titles. 
 
Women
 
Kai Horne picked up a big third place in the 400-meter dash, crossing the finish line with a time of 1:05.74. Teammate Elle Pickrell finished seventh with a time of 1:14.26. In the 5000-meter run, Lily Pudlik and Miranda Gaupp finished third and fourth, respectively, with times of 20:31.14 and 21:15.20. 
 
Carolina Teague won the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:07.93, almost a full second ahead of second place. Also picking up a win was the women's 4x400 relay team of Teague, Horne, Onyx Magno-Hester and Hailey Fisher
 
Shelby Wilson continued her strong spring with a second place in the high jump, clearing a height of 1.55 meters. 
 
Also in the field events, freshman Rose Ward earned a fourth in the hammer throw with a distance of 37.06 meters while teammate Sophia Brouillette grabbed second in the javelin, tossing it 31.77 meters. 
 
Men
 
On the men's side, Sergey Kolesnik got things started in the 100-meter dash, finishing fifth with a time of 11.79. In the 200, Shane Cockrell also finished fifth 23.79 while Kolesnik was seventh, crossing the finish line in 23.98. 
 
On the distance side, freshman Zach Deihl took fifth in the 1500 meter with a time of 4:12.40 while Grant Yancey took fourth in the 5000 meters in 16:22.42. 
 
Xavier Venious notched a win in the 400 hurdles in 56.20 and teammate Landon Wimberley was sixth.
 
The 4x100 relay team of Venious, Wimberley, Cockrell and Kolesnik took a second, with a time of 43.45. 
 
In the field events, Millsaps dominated the high jump as freshman Storm Buescher picked up the win, clearing a height of 1.95 meters while teammates Zachary Tullos and James Turner took third and fourth, respectively. Buescher also snagged fourth in the long jump, hitting a distance of 6.34 meters. 
 
The shotput was won by the Majors with Asael Hernandez-Loredo throwing for a distance of 13.18 meters and Travion Robertson picking up a third place with a throw of 12.24 meters. Hernandez-Loredo also grabbed second in the discus and third in the hammer throw.
 
Michael Tadda rounded out the scoring finishing fifth in the javelin with a distance of 46.35 meters. 
 
What's Next
 
Both teams will be back in action on Friday, close to home as they'll head to Clinton for the Mississippi College Twilight Invitational.
