MT. BERRY, Ga. -- After some time off after spring break, the Millsaps College women's tennis team hit the road on Saturday for a Southern Athletic Association (SAA) match at Berry College.
It was a tightly contested match all morning long, but the Majors were able to prevail in the end to secure the 5-4 win.
Millsaps improves their record to 10-2 overall this year, and they stay atop the SAA standings with a 2-0 mark in league play. The loss drops Berry to 7-1, 1-1 this season.
How It Happened
Jillian Sandoz and
Morgan Jenkins secured the first win of the afternoon for the Majors with an 8-5 win at doubles three.
Grace Gaskins and
Maggie Dabadie defended their No. 10 regional ranking with a. 8-4 win at number one, but the Vikings fought back to take the point at number two.
As the match moved into singles play, the Majors early 2-1 advantage proved to be the deciding factor.
Berry picked up points with wins at singles 2,3,4 but it was not enough to get the win.
Gaskins earned her second victory of the afternoon 6-2, 7-5 at number one, and Jenkins scored a 6-1, 6-3 win at number six.
With the match tied at 4-4, it was
Marissa Brown who came through with the three set (7-5, 6-7, 6-3) win at the number five spot to clinch the win for the Majors.
What's Next?
Millsaps will be right back in action tomorrow morning when they take on Oglethorpe University in Atlanta. Matches are set to begin at 9:00 a.m. CT
