JACKSON, Miss. -- The Millsaps College baseball team welcomed the Tigers of East Texas Baptist University to Twenty Field for a midweek non-conference contest on Tuesday night.
Errors plauged both teams early on, and it was ETBU who scored a pair of unearned insurance runs late in the ballgame to pull out the 6-3 win.
The loss drops the Majors to 3-11 overall on the year. The Tigers improve to 8-6.
How It Happened
ETBU's offense got things going from the very beginning. The Tigers loaded the bases in the top of the 1st inning, and were able to score three unearned runs to take an early 3-0 lead.
The Millsaps offense had an answer in the bottom half of the inning.
With 2 outs in the inning
Jackson Hailey reached on an ETBU error. Hailey then advanced to second on another Tiger error,
Jimmy Fondren reached first base to put two runners on for the Majors. In the very next at bat
Mason Little singled through the right side scoring Hailey to make it 3-1. The errors just kept coming. In
Keaton Page's at bat Fondren was able to come around and score an unearned run to cut the lead to 3-2.
The Majors went to the bullpen in the top of the 2nd, and the combination of
Ryan Erwin and
Taylor Sullivan were outstanding in the middle innings of the game. Erwin pitched 3 innings and allowed just 2 hits. He did allow a run on a Tiger double in the top of the 4th which made it 4-2.
Millsaps had the answer in the bottom of the 4th however.
Page set the table with his lead off single, and
Christian Cooper followed that up with a single to put two runners on. Both players advanced into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by
Will Neely, and
William Warner came through with a base hit to left scoring Page to make it 4-3.
Sullivan entered the game in the top of the 5th. He turned in an outing which included scattering 4 hits over his 4 innings pitched. Unfortunately, the Tigers did break through with 2 more unearned runs in the top of the 8th to stretch their lead out to 6-3.
The Majors' offense was unable to get anything going over the final two innings as ETBU held on for the win.
Key Contributors
Warner led the offense with a pair of hits. He also drove in one run. Little had the other RBI for Millsaps.
