Birmingham-Southern Sweeps Doubleheader from the Majors

JACKSON, Miss. -- The Millsaps College baseball team returned to Twenty Field on Saturday to wrap up their Southern Athletic Association (SAA) series against Birmingham-Southern with a doubleheader.

In the first game the Panthers used 16 hits to score 15 runs and pick up the 15-6 win. In game two they led 2-0 for the better part of the contest, but scored 7 runs in the final 3 innings to grab the 9-1 win.

With the sweep of this weekend's series Birmingham-Southern improves to 13-4 overall and 3-0 in the SAA. The Majors fall to 3-15 overall and have a 1-4 mark in conference play.

Game 1
The Panthers offense came to life in the 2nd inning of the first game. BSC batted around and used 6 hits and 1 Millsaps error to put 8 runs on the scoreboard.

The Majors fought back in the bottom half of the inning however.

Jimmy Fondren doubled to right to set the stage for a big Millsaps inning. Mason Little followed with a single, before Nathan Chilton doubled into the left-center gap to score Fondren to get the Majors on the scoreboard.  Jackson Hailey hit a ball up the middle that the BSC could not field cleanly. Both Little and Chilton came around to score on the play to make it 8-3. Millsaps was not done there. Christian Cooper singled and Keaton Page walked to load the bases. Alan Merkle followed with a RBI single to score Hailey, and in the next at bat Jimmy Johnstone beat out a double play ball that allowed Cooper to score.

All told, after just two innings of play, the Majors trailed the Panthers 8-5.

Unfortunately, BSC answered right back with 2 runs in the top of the 3rd. They added 4 more in the 5th, and a run in the 9th.

The other Majors run came on a RBI groundout from Page in the bottom of the 6th.

Key Contributors
Hailey led the way for Millsaps with a pair of hits and two runs scored, while Merkle also notched two base hits for the Majors.

Hayden Williams pitched 3.1 innings in relief out of the bullpen. He allowed just 2 hits, no earned runs and struck out 3 batters.

Game 2
In the second game of the afternoon BSC used a little bit of small ball to score a run in the 1st and a run in the 2nd.

Unfortunately, the Millsaps offense struggled to get anything going early on, and the Panthers opened things up with 3 runs in the top of the 5th inning to take a 5-0 lead.

After a scoreless bottom half of the inning from the Majors, BSC put up 4 runs in the 6th to increase their lead at 9-0.

The Majors refused to go quietly however, and appeared to have something going in the bottom of the 6th.

Brennan Ducote was hit by a pitch to start things off, and Fondren and Little followed that with a pair of singles to load the bases. With the bases loaded and no outs in the inning, Merkle reached on a fielder's choice to score Ducote. Unfortunately, BSC was able to pitch out of the jam and escape the inning with just the 1 run scored.

The 9-1 mark would hold throughout the 7th inning as the Panthers completed the sweep.

Key Contributors
Four separate players recorded hits in the ballgame for the Majors.

On the mound Ryan Erwin pitched the final 1.1 innings, and allowed 0 hits while striking out a pair of BSC batters.

What's Next?
Millsaps will be back in action on Tuesday night when they host the Hawks of Huntingdon College in non-conference play. First pitch from Twenty Field is set for 4:00 p.m.
