BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Majors men's and women's track and field teams continued their 2019 outdoor season with a two day meet at the Southern Invitational.
The men's team finished 11
th overall with 19.5 points while the women's team 7
th with 41 points. Both teams had high finishers throughout the two days.
Men
On Friday, freshman
Zach Deihl got things started in the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:11.73, which put him 13
th out of 33 runners.
In the shotput,
Asael Hernandez-Loredo and
Travion Robertson finished 10
th and 11
th, respectively, with throws of 12.54 meters and 12.51 meters. Hernandez-Loredo also closed out Friday with a 2
nd place in the discus, throwing a distance of 41.96 meters.
On Saturday,
Landon Wimberley finished 25
th in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.54 seconds, ahead of more than half the field. Wimberley also had a strong showing in the 200-meter dash, finishing 17
th out of 57 runners with a time of 23.03 seconds.
Deihl picked up Saturday where he left off Friday, picking up a 12
th place out of 44 runners in the 800 meters, crossing the finish line in 2:01.48. Fellow distance teammate
Grant Yancey snagged 14
th of 44 in the 5000 meters, completing the distance in 16:19.08.
In his first meet, freshman
Storm Buescher picked up a 3rd place in the high jump, and breaking the school record, with a jump of 2.0 meters.
Hernandez-Loredo finished 3rd in the hammer throw, smashing the school record with a throw of 51.98 meters.
Women
Carolina Teague got the ball rolling for the women's team on Friday, picking up a 4
th place in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:10.03.
Payton Passantino finished 7
th in the discus with a distance of 32.09 meters while
Essence Davis grabbed 7
th in the triple jump with a distance of 10.27 meters.
On Saturday,
Abby Tew continued her hot start to the season, finishing 5
th in the 5000 meters with a time of 19:33.32.
Passantino notched another victory in her javelin belt, throwing for a distance of 39.40 meters while teammate
Sophia Brouillette finished 6
th with a distance of 29.69 meters.
Shelby Wilson picked up a 2
nd place in the high jump, hitting a height of 1.58 meters.
What's Next
The track and field teams will have next weekend off before staying in state and heading to Starkville. They'll compete in the Al Schmidt Bulldog Relays on March 22 and 23.
