SEWANEE, Tenn. -- For the second consecutive weekend the Millsaps College baseball team hit the road for a Southern Athletic Association (SAA) series.
This weekend the Majors traveled to Tennessee for a three-game set at Sewanee. The series got underway on Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader.
The Tigers picked up a 6-5 walk off win in the first game, and they completed the doubleheader sweep with a 12-5 win in game two.
Game 1
The Majors outhit Sewanee in the first game of the afternoon, but defensive struggles led to a pair of unearned runs which proved to be the difference.
The Tigers got things started with a pair of runs in the bottom of the 1st, and then added a run in the 2nd to take an early 3-0 advantge.
Millsaps answered back with a run in the top of the 3rd, but the Tigers responded with two of their own in the bottom half to move ahead 5-1.
From there the Majors pitching staff was able to keep Sewanee off of the scoreboard for the next several innings which allowed the offense to mount a comeback.
In the top of the 4th inning
Nathan Chilton notched a RBI single to cut into the Tiger lead, and
Mason Little added a RBI double in the 7th to make it a 5-3 ballgame.
After a scoreless 8th inning for both teams, the Millsaps offense made the most of their final three outs in the 9th.
Chris Hart was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, and after advancing to second base on a wild pitch, he scored on a Little RBI single to make it 5-4.
Jimmy Fondren and
Christian Cooper followed with back-to-back singles to load the bases for the Majors. A few batters later
Avery Brock pinch hit and came through with a fielder's choice RBI to tie the game at 5-5. Unfortunately the Millsaps rally ended with a strikeout.
In the bottom of the 9th inning Sewanee quickly loaded the bases and scored the walk off 6-5 win on a RBI single.
Key Contributors
Little led the run production for Millsaps with a pair of RBIs, while Chilton and
Jimmy Johnstone led the team with three hits each.
On the mound,
Hayden Williams pitched four innings out of the bullpen, scattering five hits and allowing just one unearned run.
Game 2
In the second game of the afternoon Sewanee again started hot. A pair of runs in the 1st and seven more in the 2nd gave the Tigers an 9-1 lead after just two innings of play. The early run for Millsaps came on a Fondren sacrifice fly.
Cooper gave the Majors another run on a RBI single in the 3rd, but the best Millsaps comeback chance came in the top of the 5th inning.
Back-to-back singles from Hart and Little got things started for the Majors, and Fondren picked up a fielder's choice RBI to make it 10-3. A few batters later Chilton came through with a single to score both
Jackson Hailey and Fondren which cut the Sewanee lead to 10-5.
Unfortunately the Tigers got two runs back in the bottom of the 6th and held on in the top of the 7th to pick up the 12-5 win.
What's Next?
The two teams return to Montgomery Field tomorrow morning to wrap up their series with a single game. First pich is slated for 12:00 p.m.
