SEWANEE, Tenn. -- The Millsaps College Majors and Sewanee Tigers returned Montgomery Field on Sunday afternoon to wrap up their Southern Athletic Association (SAA) series with a single nine inning game.
The Majors jumped out to an early lead in a game that was back and forth all afternoon, but the Tigers used back-to-back three run innings in the 6th and 7th to pick up a 15-12 win.
With the series sweep Sewanee improves to 21-14 overall and 8-10 in the SAA. Today's loss drops Millsaps to 8-28 overall and 2-15 in the league.
How It Happened
Much the opposite of yesterday's doubleheader, today the Majors jumped on the Tigers early this afternoon. In the top of the 1st inning Millsaps used five hits to score four runs and take the early lead.
Brennan Ducote got things started with a one-out single, he later scored on a RBI double by
Mason Little.
Chris Hart also scored on the double which put the Majors ahead 2-0. With two outs in the inning
Nathan Chilton and
Jackson Hailey put together back-to-back RBI singles to give Millsaps a 4-0 lead after just one half inning of play.
Sewanne answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning, but the Majors got it right back in the 2nd when
Jimmy Johnstone scored on a passed ball.
Unfortunately four runs from the Tigers in the bottom of the 2nd tied things up at 5-5.
After a scoreless 3rd inning on both sides, Millsaps broke through again in the 4th.
It was Ducote who again started things off for the Majors with a single. He came around to score when
Christian Cooper singled through the right side of the infield. In the very next at bat the Tigers' center fielder made an error on a ball hit by Chilton which allowed both
Jimmy Fondren and Little to score, and midway through the 4th inning Millsaps led 8-5.
Unfortunately, Sewanee responded with two runs in their half of the 4th, and then added two more in the 5th to move ahead 9-8.
The Majors would not go quietly however.
In the top of the 6th Chilton doubled home Fondren and
Keaton Page recorded a RBI groundout to bring home Cooper. That gave Millsaps a 10-9 lead.
Unfortunately that would be the final lead of the day for the Majors. The Tigers put up three runs each in both the 6th and 7th innings and added an insurance run in the 8th to bring their total to 15.
The Majors got a run in the 7th on a RBI double by Fondren, and Page hit his third home run of the year in the 8th, but it would not be enough in the end.
The Tigers pitching staff held on in the 9th to score the 15-12 win.
