JACKSON, Miss. -- The Millsaps College baseball team wrapped up the 2019 regular season on Saturday by hosting Oglethorpe University in a doubleheader.
In the first game the Majors scored a 4-3 win in extra innings, but the Stormy Petrels responded with a 13-3 win in game two to take the series two games to one.
Millsaps ends the regular season with an overall record of 9-31. They finished 3-14 in Southern Athletic Association (SAA) play. The doubleheader split puts Oglethorpe at 12-28 overall and 8-13 in the league.
Game 1
Sophomore
Ryan Erwin made his second start of the season on the mound and he was locked in early on. He retired the first nine batters of the ballgame, three of those coming by way of the strikeout.
Oglethorpe notched their first base hit to lead off the fourth inning, but Erwin was able to get out of the inning unscathed to keep the Stormy Petrels off of the scoreboard.
The Millsaps offense broke through for a run in the bottom half of the inning to open up the scoring.
Mason Little came around to score on an Oglethorpe error to give Erwin a 1-0 lead. He retired the side in order in both the fifth and sixth innings to hold that early lead.
In the bottom of the sixth the Majors came away with a pair of runs to push their advantage out to 3-0. Little and
Avery Brock led off the inning with back-to-back doubles to make it 2-0. Brock later scored on a
Keaton Page single which gave Millsaps a 3-0 lead through six innings.
Unfortunately, Oglethorpe answered back with two runs of their own in the top of the seventh to cut it back to 3-2. They added a run in the eighth, and after neither team could score in the ninth which pushed the game to extra innings.
Taylor Sullivan tossed a three-up, three-down top of the tenth which set the stage for the walk-off win in the bottom half of the inning.
Little walked to lead off the inning, and Brock reached on a fielder's choice. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch. That left first base open prompting Oglethorpe to intentionally walk
Jimmy Fondren. With the bases loaded
Nathan Chilton came through with a deep sacrifice fly to score Little and give the Majors the 4-3 win.
Key Contributors
Brennan Ducote and Little each had a pair of hits to lead the Millsaps offense. Ducote's day pushed his batting average out to a team-high .321 on the year.
Although he did not earn the win, Erwin turned in his best outing of the year on the mound. His final line showed 6.2 innings pitched, and just two hits and one earned run allowed. He also struck out a career-high five batters.
It was Sullivan who picked up his third win of the season in relief. He pitched the final 2.2 innings, and allowed just one hit and no earned runs.
Game 2
In the second game of the afternoon it was again the Majors who jumped on the scoreboard first. Brock picked up his sixth RBI of the season on a groundout in the bottom of the first to put Millsaps ahead 1-0.
Oglethorpe responded with two runs in the top of the second, and added two more in the third to take a 4-1 lead.
The Majors had their answer in the bottom of the third when Brock picked up RBI number seven on a single. He came around to score on a wild pitch later in the inning to make it a 4-3 game.
Unfortunately it was all Stormy Petrels the rest of the way. They scored a run each in the fourth and fifth innings, added a pair in the sixth and really opened the game up with five runs in the top of the seventh.
That deficit proved to be too much to overcome for Millsaps in the 13-3 loss.
