CONWAY, Ark. -- On Friday afternoon, the Millsaps College baseball team opened up postseason play with a Southern Athletic Association (SAA) tournament game against the No. 1 seeded Warriors of Hendrix College.
Solid starting pitching combined with timely hitting helped lead the Majors to the 5-1 opening round upset.
How It Happened
Barret Kaul got the start on the mound for the Majors, and he was absolutely unhittable for five innings.
The offense was able to push a run across in the top of the fourth inning when
Avery Brock singled to score
Mason Little to make it 1-0.
Kaul did his part in keeping the Warriors off the scoreboard as Hendrix did not record a hit until the leadoff batter singled to start the sixth.
The Majors scored again in the eighth inning on an outstanding squeeze bunt by
Jimmy Fondren to make it 2-0 Millsaps.
Hendrix finally got a run in the bottom of the inning, but
Ryan Erwin relieved Kaul with one away and was able to limit the damage to just one run to preserve the lead.
In the top of the ninth the Majors broke the game open with three runs on three hits to pull ahead 5-1.
With a pair of runners on,
Alan Merkle singled and advanced all the way to third on an error by the Warrior right fielder.
Nathan Chilton and
Keaton Page both came around to score on the play to put Millsaps up 4-1.
Jimmy Johnstone followed that up with a RBI groundout to score Merkle and make it 5-1.
Erwin worked around a pair of walks in the bottom of the ninth to close out the win and pick up his third save of the season.
Key Contributors
Kaul's final line included 7.1 innings pitched, just two hits allowed, the one earned run and three strikeouts.
Offensively, Page led the way with three hits. Johnstone added a pair of base hits and a RBI, while Fondren and Brock also drove in runs for the Majors.
