JACKSON, Miss. -- For the second time in as many weeks the Millsaps College baseball team will play a team near the top of the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) standings. This weekend the Majors travel to Georgia for a three-game set with the Vikings of Berry College.
Check out the game notes below for all of the details on this weekend's series.
Last Week
Millsaps was swept by first-place Hendrix College last weekend, but the Majors responded in a big way on Wednesday.
They traveled to Georgia for a midweek doubleheader with LaGrange College. The Panthers came into the week ranked as the No. 20 team nationally in the most recent D3Baseball.com NCAA Division III poll.
LaGrange scored five runs on seven hits in the first game to pick up a 5-0 win. In the second game of the afternoon the Majors answered back with a 7-5 win.
Jimmy Johnstone led the Millsaps offense with five hits and three RBIs on the afternoon, while
Ryan Erwin pitched five strong innings in middle relief to pick up his second win of the season.
With the doubleheader split the Majors enter this weekend at 6-22 overall on the year. They are 2-9 in SAA play.
Saturday, April 6 12:00 p.m. CT (DH) & Sunday, April 7th 11:00 a.m. CT at Berry College (20-9, 8-4 SAA)
The Vikings enter the weekend at 20-9 this year. Berry is 8-4 in SAA play which puts them at second place in the conference standings, one game behind Hendrix. They come in having lost three out of their last five games, including two of three to Birmingham-Southern last weekend.
The Vikings are receiving 30 votes in the most recent D3.baseball.com/NCBWA top-25 national poll.
Sophomore Spence Johns and senior Casey Whitaker lead the Berry offense. Johns ranks second in the SAA with a .391 batting average. He is also tops on the team with 29 RBIs. Whitaker has added 25 RBIs of his own, and also has ten extra-base hits on the season.
On the mound the Vikings have had their struggles this season, posting just a 7.43 team ERA. With a 3-1 record and an ERA of 3.57, junior Ben Cook has been a bright spot for Berry's pitching staff.
