Millsaps Sweeps Doubleheader at No. 21 Huntingdon

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The Millsaps College baseball team hit the road on Tuesday afternoon for a doubleheader at Huntingdon College. The Hawks entered the matchup as the No. 21 team in the most recent D3Baseball.com/NCBWA National Poll.

The Majors offense came alive as they combined for 22 hits on the afternoon en route to a pair of wins.

Millsaps won game one 4-1, and used an eight-run top of the 6th in the nightcap to complete the sweep with an 11-9 game two win.

With the two wins the Millsaps record improves to 8-25 overall on the year. Huntingdon falls to 22-11.

Game 1
After a pair of scoreless innings on both sides to begin the game, the Majors offense got things going in the top of the 3rd inning.

Nathan Chilton led off the inning with a single, but a sacrifice bunt and fly out quickly gave Huntingdon two outs. Fortunately Millsaps was able to string together some timely hits to push across a pair of runs.

Chris Hart singled to score Chilton and advanced to second on a throw home. Avery Brock followed that up with a single to center scoring Hart to make it 2-0 Majors.

The Hawks responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning, but that proved to be their only offense in the first game.

Millsaps added a pair of insurance runs on a Brennan Ducote triple in the top of the 4th, and that 4-1 advantage would be all the pitching staff needed.

Taylor Sullivan pitched four strong innings out of the bullpen to pick up his second win of the season. He allowed just two hits and the one run.

Ryan Erwin closed out the game by working around an error in the bottom of the 7th inning to pick up his first save of the season.

Game 2
The offense picked up right where they left off as they opened up the second game with three runs in the top of the 1st inning.

Jimmy Johnstone led off the game with a single, and Ducote immediately hit his second triple of the afternoon to score Johnstone and put Millsaps up 1-0. Later in the inning Ducote scored on a Mason Little sacrifice fly, and Brock capped off the inning with a RBI double to score Hart and give the Majors the early 3-0 advantage.

Unfortunately Huntingdon answered back in a big way. They scored five runs in the 2nd, added three more in the 3rd and tacked on a run in the 5th to move ahead 9-3.

Down to their last six outs the Majors fought back. They exploded for eight runs on five hits in the top of the 6th to take an 11-9 lead. Millsaps batted around, and Jimmy Fondren, Johnstone and Little all had clutch RBI hits in the inning.

The Hawks rallied back in the bottom of the 6th inning and had a pair of runners on when Erwin was called on to pitch for the second time on the afternoon. He recorded the final two outs of the 6th and pitched a three-up, three-down 7th to secure the win and his second save of the day.

What's Next?
The Majors are on the road again this weekend, as they jump back into Southern Athletic Association (SAA) play with a three-game series at Sewanee. The series gets underway with a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
