BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- On Tuesday, the Millsaps College volleyball team traveled to Birmingham-Southern College for a conference matchup with the Panthers. The Majors took an early advantage, but costly errors gave BSC a chance to take the lead and run away with a 3-1 victory.
How It Happened
Set 1
The Majors .424 hitting average overcame an early 3-6 deficit before evening the score at 13-13. Millsaps found themselves in good position to take the first set when
McKenzi Petricko and
Bre Reed doubled up on kills to go ahead of Birmingham-Southern 25-21, taking the 1-0 lead.
Additionally, Petricko dominated the beginning of the game with seven kills, improving her season total to 181, an SAA best.
Set 2
After a service error, Millsaps lost all momentum, giving the Panthers a 15-10 advantage. Offensively, the Majors struggled with seven attack errors, dropping the second set 16-25.
Set 3
The third set went back-and-forth between the two teams until
Mary Tebbe settled in, setting up Petricko to take the lead at 11-9.
Katelyn Thomas, the setter counter-part, had an outstanding game with 21 assists and 13 digs, cutting the BSC lead to four at 23-19.
Unfortunately, Birmingham-Southern crushed the chances of a comeback, advancing to 2-1 for the match.
Set 4
Millsaps continued to force pressure on the home team, but this time it was
Erica Bennett that found a rhythm. Bennett posted 14 kills, adding to her senior campaign of 174 (2nd in the SAA), while putting the Majors out in front 21-18.
Regrettably, 39 total errors destroyed a promising lead, allowing BSC to take the 3-1 win.
