CONWAY, Ark. -- On Sunday, the Millsaps College men's basketball team was unable to overcome a late rally from the Warriors as Hendrix College topped the Majors 73-66 in Southern Athletic Association (SAA) play.
The Majors led by as many as eight points in the second half, but Hendrix rallied back and then held off a late Millsaps comeback to secure the win.
The loss drops Millsaps to 11-5 overall and 3-2 in the SAA. They are currently in a three-way tie for third place in the conference standings.
How It Happened
Millsaps started out hot, both on the offensive and defensive ends of the floor.
Anthony Hughes opened up the scoring with a jumper, and the Majors outscored the Warriors 11-3 over the next seven minutes to grab an 13-3 lead.
The Warriors fought back however, and after ending the half with a made free throw, Hendrix led 28-27 at the break.
The start of the second half was similar to the first. Hughes got things going with a made jump shot, and by the first media timeout the Majors were ahead 38-30.
Unfortunately Hendrix had an answer. The Warriors went on a 13-0 run midway through the half to take a 43-38 lead.
They led by as many as nine points several times before Millsaps came back.
A 7-0 run inside of five minutes from the Majors cut the deficit to 59-57, but Hendrix was able to hang on down the stretch for the win.
Notables
Hughes led Millsaps with 12 points, while
Justin Van Pelt recorded his third double-double of the season with 11 points and a season-high 18 rebounds.
