Men's Basketball Falls in Triple Overtime Heartbreaker at Oglethorpe

ATLANTA, Ga. -- The Millsaps College men's basketball team came up just short in a Southern Athletic Association (SAA) road battle on Friday night.

The Majors were edged out 114-107 in triple overtime by host Oglethopre University.

The loss drops Millsaps to 11-6 overall and 3-3 in SAA play. The Stormy Petrels improve to 10-7 overall and 4-2 in the league.

How It Happened
Regulation was not enough in this contest that saw neither team lead by more than two possessions in the opening half. A pair of free throws inside the last twenty seconds from Kalvin Spikes cut the Oglethorpe lead to 38-37 at halftime.

It took Millsaps less than three minutes of play in the second half to regain the lead. The Majors remained in control for nearly the entire period, leading by as many as ten points.

Unfortunately, Oglethopre battled back down the stretch, and although they never led, a layup inside the last 15 seconds of play tied the game at 75-75 and forced overtime.

The Stormy Petrels struck first in the extra period, but the lead changed hands several times. Justin Van Pelt put Millsaps up 84-82 on a tip in with just 37 seconds remaining, but Oglethorpe answered on the other end to force a second overtime.

This time the Majors jumped out quickly, going on a 10-0 run, highlighted by eight points from Ryan McLaurin. Oglethorpe refused to go away however, fighting back to get within three points, and then forcing a third overtime period on a three-pointer in the final seconds.

The Stormy Petrels opened up the scoring in the third overtime, and although it was tied at 102-102 with just over two minutes to play, the home team was able to pull away down the stretch and score the 114-107 win.

Notables
Anthony Hughes led Millsaps with 23 points. McLaurin poured in 18, including connecting on four three-point shots.

Van Pelt notched a double-double with 17 points, and a team-high 21 rebounds. He also had 7 blocks on the defensive end of the floor.

She'Chem Grant added 15 points, while Spikes rounded out the double-digit scorers for the Majors with 13.
