Women's Basketball Slips on the Road at Sewanee

SEWANEE, Tenn. -- The Millsaps College women's basketball team kicked off the final road trip of the regular season on Friday night with a stop at Sewanee.

Millsaps, having won the earlier meeting this year 52-47, was looking to complete the season sweep.

Unfortunately, the host Tigers had other plans this time around, as they used some hot three-point shooting to build a first-half lead and held off the Majors down the stretch in a 58-41 win.

The loss drops Millsaps to 9-12 overall and 3-7 in conference play. Sewanee improves to 9-12 overall. They now hold a 4-6 league mark.

How It Happened
The early portion of the first quarter was back-and-forth, with the Tigers scoring the game's opening points, but the Majors holding a 7-6 lead at the midway point.

Sewanee got a three-pointer, one of five they would make in the opening half, to move ahead 9-7. They never trailed for the remainder of the evening.

Millsaps got to within one point late in the quarter on an Anna Wilson layup, but the Tigers closed on an 8-0 run to lead 20-11 after the first ten minutes of play.

Their lead grew to as many as 15 points early in the second quarter before a three-point play from Taelor Manning and a pair of free throws from Wilson cut the defecit to 10.

The Majors got as close as seven points midway through the quarter on back-to-back Dia Fortenberry layups, but the Tigers had an answer for each Millsaps run. They closed out the half with a jumper to take a 35-25 lead at halftime.

Sewanee scored the first 10 points of the third quarter, and the Majors struggled to recover.

Despite Millsaps holding the Tigers to 0-12 from beyond the three-point line in the second half, Sewanee did enough on the defensive end of the floor to secure the 58-41 victory.

Notables
Fortenberry finished with 12 points to lead all scorers for the Majors. She was also a presence on the defensive end of the floor making 6 steals.

Andrea Rayford led the team with 6 rebounds.

Millsaps outscored Sewanee in the paint 20-18.
