ATLANTA, Ga. -- The hottest team in the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) stayed that way on Sunday afternoon.
The Millsaps College men's basketball team traveled to Oglethopre University for a SAA Quarterfinal matchup against the Stormy Petrels.
The Majors jumped out to a 47-25 lead by halftime, and built on that advantage in the second half to come away with a 93-68 win.
The victory pushes Millsaps to 17-9 overall on the season, and on to the semifinal round of the conference tournament for the first time since the 2012-13 season.
How It Happened
It took the Majors just under 12 minutes to grab their first double-digit lead of the afternoon.
Saxton Becker's three-pointer with 8:06 remaining in the first-half put Millsaps ahead 23-13.
That basket was the second three-pointer in a row from Becker, and part of an 11-0 run by the Majors.
In what has become a common theme in the last several games, once Millsaps got things going offensively, the opponent was never able to get the deficit under 10 points.
An
Anthony Hughes layup put Millsaps up 40-19 with 2:14 left in the half. After trading baskets with the Stormy Petrels for several possessions,
Newlon Gillihan closed the half with a jumper to make it 47-25 at halftime.
Oglethopre made a run early in the second half, but the Majors' defense was able to hold strong. The Stormy Petrels got as close as 13 points, but once Millsaps ended their run the Majors were never really threatened the rest of the game.
16 different players saw minutes in the second half as Millsaps was able to empty the bench in a 93-68 win.
Notables
Kaleb Jenkins led all scorers with 22 points. He also had 9 rebounds and 5 assists. Hughes added 21 points, and pulled down 10 rebounds to finish with his second double-double of the season.
The Majors dominated Oglethopre inside the paint, outscoring the Stormy Petrels 38-22 underneath the basket, and winning the rebounding battle 51-28.
Millsaps topped 90 points for the third consecutive game, and sixth time overall this season.
