Softball Opens SAA Play with Split of Doubleheader at Hendrix

CONWAY, Ark. — On Saturday, the Millsaps College softball team opened up Southern Athletic Association (SAA) play with a doubleheader at Hendrix College.

The Majors scored four runs in the top of the 6th inning to help grab a 4-2 win in game one. The second game featured a lot of offense on both sides, but the Warriors used the final at bat of the game to score an 11-10 walk off win.

Millsaps is now 7-6 overall and 1-1 in SAA play.

Game 1
Amber Funderburk got the start in the circle, and she was nearly unhittable over the first five innings. She struck out five batters, and allowed just two Hendrix hits.

The offense was quiet early on, but finally broke through in the top of the 6th inning.

In that inning the Majors did all of their damage with two outs. Gia Zeringue doubled, and came around to score on a Warrior error in the next at bat. After Jordan Lipari and Emily Cook drew back-to-back walks to load the bases, Magen Authement picked up a RBI with a third consecutive walk. Leslie Norris followed that up with a single to left center allowing both Cook and Lipari to score to give Millsaps the 4-0 lead.

Cassidy Thrash pitched the final two innings, working out a jam in the bottom of the 7th to secure the 4-2 win.

Key Contributors
Norris led the way with the two RBIs, while Kendall Carder and Zeringue each had a double for the Majors.

Game 2
The offensive fireworks started early in the second game.

Norris reached on an error to lead off the game. Carder singled, and Ty Bergeron drew a walk to load the bases. In the very next at bat Zeringue doubled to right field scoring both Carder and Norris. Lipari notched a RBI on a groundout to make it 3-0, and Hannah Derouen launched a ball over the left field fence for a two-run homerun to give Millsaps the early 5-0 lead.

Hendrix managed just one run in the bottom of the 1st. They added another run in the 3rd, but broke through for four more in the 4th inning to take a 6-5 lead.

All told, the Warriors scored eight unanswered runs before Millsaps responded in the top of the 6th. Unfortunately, Hendrix posted two runs in their half of the inning to move ahead 10-6.

Down to their last three outs the Majors went to work. Norris and Carder both singled to lead off the 7th inning. Cook came through with a pinch-hit double scoring both runners to make it a 10-8 game. She scored on a RBI single by Zeringue, and the Majors tied the game at 10-10 when Zeringue scored on a Cameron Trussell RBI single.

Unfortunately, Hendrix loaded the bases in the bottom of the 7th, and drew a two-out walk to take game two 11-10.

Key Contributors
Brooklyn Wascom got the start as the designated player and she led the team with three hits. Zeringue, Trussell, Norris and Carder each had multiple hits while Zeringue drove in a team-high three runs.
