ATLANTA, Ga. -- For the second consecutive season the Millsaps College women's basketball team advanced to the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Tournament semifinals, and for the second consecutive season the Majors' season came to an end during the semifinal round.
Millsaps overcame a slow second quarter to fight back and give the nationally ranked Oglethorpe University Stormy Petrels all they could handle down the stretch.
Unfortunately the Petrels were able to hold on for a 64-53 win.
The Majors end the season at 13-14 overall and 6-8 in SAA play.
How It Happened
It took several minutes for the teams to settle in on the offensive end of the floor.
Dia Fortenberry opened up the scoring with a pair of free throws at the 7:41 mark. Both sides traded baskets during the opening quarter, and the game was tied 11-11 after the first ten minutes of play.
Unfortunately, the Petrels offense caught fire in the second quarter. Oglethorpe shot 47.1% from the field, including 3-5 from three-point range to carry a 33-20 lead to the halftime locker room.
The Majors responded in a big way in the 3rd quarter.
Millsaps got nine points from
Taelor Manning, all coming via the three-point shot. The defense held Oglethorpe to just four field goals all quarter long as the Majors were able to cut the deficit to 46-38.
Millsaps made a couple of runs at the deficit in the 4th quarter, but each time they cut it to a two-possesion game the Stormy Petrels had an answer. In the end, Oglethorpe was able to hold on for the 64-53 win.
Notables
Manning led the way with 18 points, 13 of them coming in the second half. In the final game of her Millsaps College career,
Megan Donaldson added 13 points. Fortenberry rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11 points.
