JACKSON, Miss. -- On Sunday afternoon, the Millsaps College women's basketball capped off the weekend with another Southern Athletic Association (SAA) win. This time the Majors dominated the Hendrix College Warriors from the opening tip until the final buzzer.
Millsaps scored the first 10 points of the game, but a late Hendrix run in the 2nd quarter made it a 23-16 game at halftime. The Majors had complete control of the second half however, pulling away for a 59-33 win.
The victory pushes the Millsaps overall record to 11-13. They are 5-8 in SAA play. The loss drops Hendrix to 2-21 overall and 0-13 in the league.
The Majors currently sit just one game outside of 4th place in the SAA standings.
How It Happened
Millsaps, paced by 6 early points from
Taelor Manning, opened up the game on a 10-0 run. The Warriors found their way on to the scoreboard at the 4:24 mark of the 1st quarter, but the Majors continued their strong play on the offensive end, using 53.3% shooting from the field to take an 18-8 lead after the first 10 minutes of play.
Hendrix managed to outscore the Majors 8-5 in the second quarter, as both teams struggled offensively. The Warriors got all 8 of their points inside an 8-0 run that closed out the quarter.
The visitor's got to within 2 points a couple of times early in the 3rd, but Millsaps quickly recovered and started to pull away.
A huge 13-0 run, powered by 8 points from
Dia Fortenberry, in the middle part of the period helped the Majors effort.
The final outcome was never in doubt down the stretch as the defense held the Warriors to just 3 points in the final quarter.
Millsaps was able to empty their bench in the final minutes of the contest, as 10 different players put their name in the scoring column.
Notables
Manning led the way with 18 points on 7-9 shooting from the field. She also had a team-high 6 assists.
Devan Caldwell finished with 10 points and 4 rebounds.
The Majors forced 23 Hendrix turnovers, and turned those into 23 points on the other end. They also outscored the Warriors 26-18 inside the paint.
What's Next?
Millsaps will close out the regular season at home next weekend when they host Birmingham-Southern. Senior Day festivities will take place prior to Saturday's 1:00 p.m. tip-off.
