JACKSON, Miss. -- The Millsaps College track & field program opened up their 2020 season on Saturday by hosting the Leap Day Relays at the Track & Field Complex.
The meet was highlighted by several personal records in both the running and field events.
Women
Shelby Wilson, with a jump of 1.52 meters, placed first in the high jump.
Payton Passantino dominated the javelin with a distance 40.90 meters.
Sophia Brouillette placed second in that same competition, and had a personal best of 9.02 meters in the shot put.
Passantino won the shot put (11.13 meters) and a had a personal best throw of 35.18 meters in the hammer throw.
Rose Ward's distance of 37.31 meters earned her a second-place finish in the hammer throw.
Sydney Mann's height of 2.90 meters put her at second place in the pole vault.
In the running events,
Abby Tew started off the season with a third-place finish, and personal best time of 5:14.49 in the 1500 meter run. Teammate
Isabel Baird's time of 5:21.99 in the same event was also a personal best.
The relays were a strong point for the Majors all day long.
The 4x100 meter team (
Carolina Teague,
Alexandria Ellis,
Khloe Colar,
Kai Horne) picked up a win. In the 1600 meter sprint relay the team of Kolar, Teague, Ellis and Baird finished second only to Mississippi College, a NCAA Division II opponent.
The 4x400 meter team of Horne, Kolar, Ellis, Teague scored another firrst place finish for Millsaps with a time of 4:19.44.
Men
Storm Buescher, with a jump of 1.90 meters, placed first in the high jump.
Michael Van Uden and
William Weber both cleared 3.95 meters to lead the way in the pole vault.
Chris Shead placed second in the shot put with a throw of 10.79 meters. He also had a third place finish in the hammer throw.
In the running events,
Samuel Saia's time of 4:18.01 in the 1500 meter run was a personal best.
The Distance medley team of
Landry Lemoine,
Worth Wilsey, Saia and
Grant Yancey won their race with a time of 11:53.28
Additionally, the 1600 meter sprint relay group of
Landon Wimberley,
Sergey Kolesnik,
Shane Cockrell and Saia finished in second place, only behind Mississippi College.
Notable
The Majors scored the win in a mixed field event. The team consisted of Ward, Passantino, Weber and Shead.
What's Next?
Millsaps travels to Clinton next weekend for the Mississippi College Season Opener. Events are scheduled to get underway at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 7.
