Softball Splits Doubleheader with Birmingham Southern and Hendrix

CONWAY, Ark. — On Sunday, the Millsaps College softball team traveled to Hendrix College for a doubleheader with the Birmingham Southern College Panthers and the Hendrix College Warriors.

Due to a recent announcement from the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) that all conference competition would be suspended effective March 20, the BSC seniors, Hendrix seniors, and Kendall Carder and Cameron Trussell were each honored throughout the day.

In the opening game against the Panthers, the BSC offense came alive in the middle innings to help grab an 11-0 run-rule win.

In the second game of the afternoon, a big 6th inning from the Majors helped Millsaps score a 6-3 victory.

Game 1 vs Birmingham Southern College
Amber Funderburk got the start in the circle, and she was able to hold the Panthers hitless well in to the 3rd inning.

BSC broke through for a pair of runs in the top of the 3rd, but Funderburk was able to get a pop up to end the inning and limit the damage.

Unfortunately, the Panthers opened up the game with four runs in the 4th, and added five more runs in the 5th to grab an 11-0 lead.

Katelyn Norse led off the bottom of the 5th inning with a single, but the Majors were unable to overcome the deficit as the Panthers held on for the run-rule victory.

Game 2 vs Hendrix College
Karley Williams was the starting pitcher in the second game, and she nearly perfect through the first three innings. She allowed just one hit, and worked around a pair of walks to keep the Warriors off the scoreboard.

Unfortunately, it was a real pitcher's duel as the Warrior pitching staff also put up zeros.

The Majors scored first, putting up a pair of runs in the top of the 5th.

Magen Authement opened up the inning with a double. She advanced to third when Leslie Norris reached on a fielding error.

After Norris stole second, Carder came through with a single to score both runners.

Hayleigh Rogers worked around a Hendrix single in the bottom half of the inning, and the offense picked right back up where they left off in the 6th.

Gia Zeringue got things going with a leadoff double. Trusell followed that up with a base knock to put a pair of runners on base.

A couple of batters later, Zeringue came in to score on another Warrior error to give Millsaps a 3-0 advantage. After a pitching change, Hendrix again made an error which loaded the bases for the Majors.

Carder stepped to plate, and broke the game open with a bases-clearing double to left center field.

The Warriors tried to rally back late, but Hannah Derouen was able to limit the damage, and hold on for the 6-3 win.
