CLERMONT, Fla. — On Sunday, the Millsaps College softball team continued their annual spring break trip by splitting a pair of contests.
The Majors fell to Swarthmore College 2-1, but responded in the afternoon with a 7-6 walk-off win over Case Western Reserve University.
Millsaps is now 11-7 overall on the season.
Game 1 vs Swarthmore College
The Majors opened up the scoring in the top of the 1st when
Leslie Norris scored on a wild pitch. Unfortunately, Millsaps was held to just two hits over the final six innings of play.
Amber Funderburk turned in another strong outing in the circle, but Swarthmore did just enough to edge out a 2-1 win.
Funderburk's final line showed 6.0 innings pitched and just three hits and two earned runs allowed. She also struck out a pair of batters.
Game 2 vs Case Western Reserve University
The Spartans, who were the visitors on the scoreboard, got out to a hot start early on. CWRU scored three runs in the 1st, and two runs in the 2nd to take a 5-0 lead.
Millsaps broke through for their first run in the bottom of the 2nd when
Hayleigh Rogers scored on a fielder's choice.
Unforuntately, the Spartans got that run back in their half of the 6th inning.
Trailing 6-1, and down to their final six outs of the game, the Majors went to work.
Millsaps plated three runs in the 6th. Two coming from a
Kendall Carder single, and another on a double by
Lindsey Osbon.
In the bottom of the 7th, the Majors pulled to within one at 6-5 when
Hannah Derouen scored on a CWRU error. With two outs in the inning, and a pair of runners on base
Brooklyn Wascom was called on to pinch hit. She worked the count full, and came through with a bases clearing double to give Millsaps the 7-6 walk-off win.
Four different players saw time in the pitcher's circle, but it was Derouen who earned the win.
What's Next
The Majors have tomorrow off. The schedule picks back up on Tuesday with the final games in the Sunshine State. Millsaps will play UMASS Dartmouth at 8:15 a.m. CT and Marietta College at 10:30 a.m. CT.
