JACKSON, Miss. – A valiant second half effort by the Millsaps men's basketball team could not overcome a hot start by Berry as the Vikings held off the Majors, 67-56 inside the Hangar Dome on Saturday.
Freshman
Cameron Williams and senior
Joshua Miller led Millsaps (1-3, 1-3 SAA) with 12 points each. Berry (2-0, 2-0 SAA) fired out of the gates with the first 15 points of the contest to lead from start to finish.
Berry's offense was buoyed by a 1-2 punch of Michael Johnson and Chase Ellis, who also scored a dozen points apiece. The difference in the game proved to be Berry's dominance in the paint as they outrebounded the Majors by nine, 30-21. The Vikings' bench also performed exceptionally well, outscoring the Majors' by 13 at 30-17.
Millsaps was able to cut the lead down to as little as four points at 33-29 to open the second thanks to a Williams opening three-point jumper. Berry would then expand its lead to 12 over the next few minutes.
However, Millsaps fought back, clawing to within six points after a pair of Miller free throws midway through the half. The Vikings would maintain control and grow its lead back up to 14, before claiming the 67-56 decision.
The Majors return to action at home next Friday, Jan. 29th against Centre College (Ky.). Live stats and video links will be made available for fans at home.
