ATLANTA – A powerful barrage of three-point baskets in the second half was enough for Oglethorpe to pull away from the Millsaps men's basketball team and win 72-52 at Dorough Field House on Friday.
Millsaps (1-4, 1-4 SAA) received another strong game from freshman wing
Cameron Williams, who tallied 15 points and eight rebounds. Junior transfer
Xavier Bass was a force on the glass, posting a career-best 15 boards in the defeat.
The Majors led for most of the first half and 32-30 at the break, but went 0 for 20 from three-point range in the second half to fall behind. Oglethorpe (4-1, 4-1 SAA) heated up, connecting on six treys after intermission, including a stretch where the Stormy Petrels connected on 4 of 6 midway through the final frame to build a sizeable 58-43 lead with 8:44 remaining.
Oglethorpe's Dimetri Chambers would score three of his game-high 26 points with an old-fashioned three-point play to extend the lead even more. However, senior
Drew Burnett (eight points) wouldn't be denied by answering with his own three-point play in an attempt at a Millsaps comeback.
After another Stormy Petrel two-point basket, the Majors would then go on a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to 63-52 with 4:01 on the clock. The momentum was halted when Oglethorpe's Carlos Sone drained four points on a rare long-range and-one opportunity.
Both teams return to the court for a rematch at 12 p.m. CT on Saturday. Live video and stats links can be found on the men's basketball schedule page at gomajors.com.
