JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps women's basketball team used a balanced-scoring effort and clutch free throws to hold off Berry, 46-41 Sunday afternoon inside the Hangar Dome.
The Majors were highly effective from the charity stripe, shooting 25 of 33 on the day. A deep bench also added 29 points, including a team-high 15 points by senior forward
Dia Fortenberry. The three-time All-SAA First Team honoree returned from an injury to make an instant impact with a team-high seven rebounds, two steals and two assists.
Millsaps (5-0, 4-0 SAA) once again showed a stifling defensive presence by holding Berry (0-3, 0-2 SAA) to 24.1 percent from the field.
After leading the Vikings by one point at halftime, a slow start to the third quarter by the Majors saw their lead turn into a six-point deficit going into the media timeout. Their fortunes started to turn around with an 8-0 run to regain the lead.
With the game tied at 31-31 going into the fourth quarter, it became a back-and-forth contest with multiple lead changes.
Sophomore
Devan Caldwell (eight bench points) found a cutting
Andrea Rayford who finished with a nifty scoop layup to give the Majors a 38-34 advantage midway through the final frame.
The Vikings would then battle back with a 7-2 run to retake a 41-39 edge with 1:30 remaining. Millsaps would then hold Berry scoreless the rest of the way and sank seven consecutive free throws to ice the game.
Millsaps returns to action against Centre College in the Hangar Dome at 4 p.m. CT on Saturday. Live video and stat links can be found on the women's basketball schedule page at gomajors.com.
