CONWAY, Ark. – Strong individual performances and team records highlighted the final regular season weekend for the Millsaps men's and women's swimming and diving programs. The Majors swam at Hendrix on Saturday and competed at DII in-state foe Delta State on Sunday.
A total of nine Majors set team bests in the two meets combined. The trend of record setting continued as Millsaps set 10 new marks the weekend before.
On Friday, seven Majors helped rewrite the record books. Freshman
Madisyn Latino (57.27; 100-yard freestyle),
Ronny DeFelicibus (1000-yard freestyle; 13:06.25) and
Anna Chris Nicholas (1:06.76; 100-yard backstroke) all set new times on the women's side. Nicholas won the backstroke by besting five other Hendrix swimmers.
In the men's competition, freshman
Anthony Werner established a new 200-yard freestyle time (1:50.19) for the second consecutive week. He joined
Breydon Conner,
Cooper Clevenger and
Casey Miller in setting the standard in the 200-yard medley relay (1:48.74). The squad also set the previous mark the week before.
There were several strong times posted in the meet that came just short of the top marks in program history. Latino finished second out of 14 swimmers in the 50-yard freestyle, finishing in 26:56 (0.05 seconds off the record). Freshman
Ginny Ray Clevenger won the 200-yard IM in 2:09.48. The 200-yard medley relay team of Clevenger, Nicholas,
Ellie Pfaff and Latino came just 0.02 seconds short off the top mark.
Near misses but quality times on the men's side included Werner's second-place finish in the 100-yard free (50.76) and Conner's 100-yard backstroke (1:00.51). Conner's time was 0.01 seconds off his team best set on Jan. 15.
Hendrix won both meets as a team on Friday, besting the women, 161-30, and the men, 153-56.
On Saturday, the Majors traveled to Cleveland, Miss., to face DII Delta State. Millsaps set four more records to wrap up the regular season.
Nicholas shattered the previous best Millsaps women's time in the 500-yard freestyle. Her time of 5:52.88 improved the old mark by nearly 30 seconds (6:20.72). Nicholas then helped write yet another relay record, this time with DeFelicibus, Pfaff and Latino in the 200-yard freestyle (1:38.41).
For the men's team, Conner became the first Major to swim under one minute in the 100-yard backstroke (59.00). He wasn't done as he competed with Werner, Miller and
Cooper Clevenger to swim the 200-yard freestyle relay in record-breaking fashion (1:38.41).
Other solid times included Latino in the 50-yard free (26.28) and 100-yard free (57.48), Nicholas in the 100-yard backstroke (1:09.86) and Werner in the men's 100-yard free (51.26).
Delta State controlled the team scores, winning the women's meet, 145-65, and the men's competition, 145-54.
Millsaps will now focus on the SAA Conference Championships, which will be held at the Birmingham CrossPlex, Feb. 17-20.
