Men’s Soccer Comes Up Short in Pair of Homecoming Matches

Majors Fall 3-1 to Centre on Friday, 2-0 to Sewanee on Sunday

JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps College men's soccer team (2-8-1, 0-4 SAA) was bested by Centre College, 3-1 on Friday and Sewanee, 2-0 on Sunday in a pair of Homecoming Matches at Harper Davis Field.

Match 1: Centre 3, Millsaps 1 (Friday)

Graduate midfielder Ruben Hamann scored in the second half while sophomore goalkeeper Wilkins Dowdy corralled two saves on Friday.

The Colonels (5-4-2, 1-1-1 SAA) outshot the Majors, 10-7. Millsaps was more accurate in shots on goal at 6-5. Centre's aggressive play style offensively showed up on the stat sheet with seven corner kicks.

The action started fast and furious as two shots from sophomore forward Jacks Dowdy were saved by Centre's goalkeeper in the first 12 minutes.

Centre would find the back of the net in the 20th minute and again right before halftime in the 44th minute for a 2-0 lead.

Looking to extend their lead, a shot attempt by Centre was saved by Dowdy in the 63rd minute. Two minutes later, another laser by the Colonels would hit the right post.

In the 82nd minute, Dowdy would find Hamann in the box to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Following a counter attack, Centre would put the match out of reach with another goal in the 88th minute for a final score of 3-1.

Match 2: Sewanee 2, Millsaps 0 (Sunday)

Sewanee (6-5-1, 2-2 SAA) were the aggressors for most of the game offensively, outshooting the Majors 26-7 (10-4 shots on goal).

Wilkins Dowdy had a stout day in goal with eight saves and nine successfully defended corner kicks.

The Majors missed a duo of opportunities to score in the opening minutes when Jacks Dowdy almost converted on two crosses.

In the 14th minute, Sewanee utilized a counterattack to net the lone goal of the half.

Both teams were sturdy defensively, until the Tigers would score another goal in the 80th minute to prevail, 2-0.
