Women’s Soccer Bested Twice in Weekend Series

Maddie Moore Generated 14 Combined Saves, Hosting Centre and Sewanee

JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps College women's soccer team (1-8-1, 0-4 SAA) competed in a pair of matches during Homecoming Weekend at Harper Davis Field. They were defeated by No. 15 Centre College, 3-0 on Friday and then Sewanee, 4-0 on Sunday. Senior goalkeeper Maddie Moore accumulated 14 saves in the two-game weekend slate.

Match 1: Centre 3, Millsaps 0 (Friday)

Outside of the first few minutes of the match, Centre (10-1-1, 3-0 SAA) controlled the flow of the game offensively. The Colonels outshot Millsaps 17-3 with a 6-1 advantage over the Majors in corners.

The Majors came out firing early. With a corner kick in the first minute of the match, senior forward Mary Ranger footed a shot right down the left-middle of the goal that was saved by the fingertips of the goalkeeper for Centre. Ranger would post two shots in the opening minute.

Later in the 15th minute, Moore would punch out a well-placed shot to the top left corner of the goal.

Centre would find the back of the net in the 19th minute on a 35-yard laser for a 1-0 lead. The Colonels would then take a commanding 2-0 lead in the 41st minute off a cross that smacked the left crossbar and into the goal.

Five minutes into the second half, the Majors would inflict self damage with an own goal to extend their deficit to 3-0.

Both teams would ultimately play to a standstill throughout the rest of the game to give Centre the 3-0 victory.

Match 2: Sewanee 4, Millsaps 0 (Sunday)

Sewanee (9-3-1, 3-1 SAA) was in control for most of the match, outshooting the Majors 25-2.

Moore was busy in net, gathering nine saves.

The Tigers netted the game's first score with a goal in the 8th minute.

Millsaps stood tall defensively in the 21st minute when Moore and the defense stopped three shot attempts by the Tigers.

In the 26th and 28th minutes, Sewanee would knock in back-to-back goals to take a commanding 3-0 lead going into halftime.

Sewanee would tack on one more goal in the opening minute of the second half on their way to a 4-0 decision.

The Majors will now travel to Atlanta in a SAA matchup with Oglethorpe this Friday, Oct. 15. Opening kick is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT with live stats and video available at gomajors.com.
