ATLANTA, Ga. – It was late-match drama that went in favor of the Millsaps women's soccer team on Friday night. Freshman all-around defender
Camille Blanchard's
strike in the 86th minute came just in time to lift the Majors over Oglethorpe, 1-0 in regulation at Oglethorpe Field.
Senior goalkeeper
Maddie Moore posted her second career clean sheet with six saves on the day, and her first against an NCAA Division III opponent.
The Majors outshot the Stormy Petrels 11-8, including a 7-3 advantage in the second half. Millsaps also maintained a 7-6 shots on goal edge by match end.
Both teams found themselves knotted up 0-0 at halftime and Millsaps (2-8-1, 1-4 SAA) created several nice counter attacks that nearly gave them the lead earlier in the second half.
Oglethorpe (3-8, 0-5 SAA) spent a large chunk of time in the Majors' end of the field, but Moore and the defense were up to the task.
With neither team seemingly giving up ground, the Majors broke free when junior
Alexi Martinez found Blanchard for her third goal of the season in the 86th minute. Martinez found Blanchard alone deep in Oglethorpe territory where she deposited a shot with her right foot in the top-right corner.
The Millsaps bench would erupt with joy and then the Majors would hold on for the 1-0 triumph.
Friday's win marked the second consecutive victory for Millsaps in the series. The Majors downed the Stormy Petrels, 2-1 in double overtime on April 11.
Millsaps will finish their two-match road trip in the Peach State against Berry College on Sunday. Opening kick is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. CT with live stats and video available at gomajors.com.
