JACKSON, Miss – The Millsaps volleyball team were victorious against Rhodes in four sets (25-21, 23-25, 25-20, 25-20). Outside hitters
Brenna Macaluso and
Bre Reed led the Majors offensively with a combined 18 kills and nine blocks inside the Hangar Dome on Saturday.
Senior middle hitter
Alyssa Jolly made her presence felt with eight kills, four blocks and a career-high 22 digs for Millsaps (9-11, 4-9 SAA).
Sophomore outside hitter
Chayton Willis shined in her first collegiate start, marking career-highs of eight kills and six digs.
Classmate and setter
Margaret Richardson had a nice outing with 30 assists, three kills and eight digs.
In an action packed first set that saw six ties and four lead changes, both teams were knotted up at 13-13. Millsaps would proceed to go on a 4-0 run capped by a Reed kill. Rhodes (8-12, 2-9 SAA) would claw their way back into the matchup and cut the lead to 20-19 before Millsaps would claim the first set with a 5-1 finish.
The Majors looked poised to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match, leading 23-21. However, Rhodes used a 4-0 flurry to tie things up.
In the pivotal third set, the Majors and Lynx were once again tied at 13-13. Millsaps would then go on a 5-0 surge punctuated by back-to-back Willis kills. This would prove to be enough separation for the Majors to win the set 25-20.
The Majors asserted their dominance in the fourth set by never trailing. A kill by Jolly ended the match and helped Millsaps sweep the season series with the Lynx.
Millsaps remain in the friendly confines inside of the Hangar Dome for their final SAA Conference matchup against Hendrix at 12 p.m. CT on Sunday, Oct. 24. Live video and live stats will be provided at gomajors.com.
