Senior Alyssa Jolly Eclipsed 500 Career Kills in Five-Set Battle

JACKSON, Miss. – Senior outside hitter Alyssa Jolly tallied a match-high 16 kills en route to surpassing 500 career kills on Sunday. Tension was high in the Sunday afternoon contest where the Millsaps volleyball ball team fell to Hendrix in five sets (14-25, 25-17, 22-25, 25-20, 15-8).

Sophomore setter Margaret Richardson had a solid day on the court with 36 assists, 11 digs and three blocks. Junior libero Hannah Mattke marked a team-high 21 digs and three service aces, while Brenna Macaluso was a wall defensively with a career-high tying eight blocks.

Millsaps (9-11, 4-10 SAA) raced out to an early 18-9 lead thanks to an 11-3 run in the first set. They would cruise to a 25-14 victory and take a 1-0 match lead.

Hendrix (12-9, 9-5 SAA) and the Majors were tied 5-5 early in the second before the Warriors would gain separation with an 7-2 surge. The Majors would give their best efforts to comeback, closing in to within 17-14 after a kill by Regan Cooper. Hendrix would hold on to their lead and win set two 25-17.

Both teams would compete valiantly in a crucial third set that saw 10 ties and three lead changes. The score was knotted up at 20-20 before Millsaps would take control with a 5-2 run to claim a 2-1 advantage in the series.

The Warriors would not go away easily, pacing their way to a 6-1 lead in set four. Their advantage would expand to as much as 17-8 before the Majors would start a comeback. Millsaps would inch their way back into the set, coming as close as 23-19 following a Mattke ace. Hendrix would hold on to send the match into a fifth and decisive set.

In the final set, the Majors would jump ahead, 6-2 but momentum quickly shifted after. Hendrix would explode with a 13-2 flurry to end the set victorious at 15-8.
