JACKSON, Miss – The Millsaps football team (1-6, 1-3 SAA) fell in a shootout to the Centre College (5-2, 2-2 SAA) by a score of 66-34. Junior wideout
Moise Tezzo filled up the stat sheet with 283 total yards and three touchdowns (two receiving, one rushing) at Harper Davis Field on Saturday.
Freshman quarterback
Brody Davis was strong in his first ever collegiate start with 324 passing yards (19 of 34) and three touchdowns.
Sophomore receiver
Temias Mason scored his first career touchdown to go along with his three catches for 57 yards.
Sophomore defensive back
Chase Heard had a solid outing with three tackles and an interception. Senior defensive backs
Ryan Taix and
Cade Broussard posted five tackles each, while junior linebacker
Josh Smith led with six stops.
The teams combined for 1,210 yards of total offense. Centre outgained Millsaps in rushing yards 383-217 with six rushing touchdowns to the Majors' one. The Colonels were a perfect 4-for-4 on fourth down while Millsaps went 1-for-3.
The Majors struck first with a seven-play, 45-yard drive that resulted in a 27-yard field goal. Centre would then respond with a three-play touchdown drive to give the Colonels a 7-3 lead.
On their second possession, the Majors used an 11-play, 82-yard drive to once again reach the redzone. The drive would stall out and Millsaps would once again settle for a field goal to make the score 7-6. Freshman kicker
Cameron Beall finished 2-for-2 on field goals and 4-for-4 on PATs.
The Colonels would then respond quickly with another touchdown from 52 yards out to push their lead up to 14-6 late in the first quarter.
On the following Majors' possession, Millsaps would march all the way down the field to the one-yard line. The Colonels would then stand tall and stuff the Majors on four tries to turn the ball over on downs.
After both teams traded punts, Centre would extend their lead to 21-6 with a 74-yard touchdown pass. Millsaps retaliated with a 71-yard jet sweep for a touchdown by Tezzo to make the score 20-13 with just over nine minutes remaining in the second quarter.
Centre would then tack on another touchdown to expand their advantage to 28-13.
The Majors would find the endzone one more time before halftime when Davis found Tezzo downfield for a 58-yard touchdown connection with just over two minutes to play.
The Colonels would utilize their two-minute drill to kick a field goal as halftime expired to take a 31-20 lead into the break.
Both team trade touchdowns on their first possession to make the score 38-27. Tezzo hauled in a 1-yard pass for the Major score.
Centre would score again to gain breathing room at 45-27.
Following a Majors' punt, it seemed as if Millsaps had gotten a stop on fourth down. However, the Colonels had other plans when they faked their punt and directly snapped the ball to their upback who raced to the pylon for a 70-yard touchdown and their largest lead at 52-27.
Exhibiting great effort all the way until the end, Davis connected with Mason for a jump ball in the endzone to make the score 52-34 with just over nine minutes remaining in the ball game.
Centre would score two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter to push the final score to 66-34.
Millsaps will next host Sewanee at Harper Davis Field on Saturday, Oct. 30, beginning at 1 p.m. CT.
