Kayla Faraca’s Late-Match Heroics Propel Majors on Senior Night

Senior Maddie Moore also Tallied a Seven-Save Shutout in 1-0 Victory on Saturday

JACKSON, Miss – Sophomore midfielder Kayla Faraca knocked in the game-winning goal in the 88th minute on Senior Night at Harper Davis Field. The Millsaps women's soccer team (3-9-1, 2-5-0 SAA) outlasted the Birmingham-Southern College Panthers (4-10-2, 1-6-0 SAA) in a battle by a score of 1-0 in the regular season finale.

Senior goalkeeper Maddie Moore tallied seven saves for her third career clean sheet while junior forward Alexi Martinez marked her third assist of the season for the Majors. The two-time SAA Defensive Player of the Week, Moore now has yielded just one goal in her last three appearances.

BSC outshot Millsaps 15-10 (7-4 shots on goal) and had a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks, but the Majors defense and Moore held true throughout.

The best opportunity for the Majors to score in the first half came on a counter attack in the 28th minute when Camille Blanchard's shot was saved by the goalie's fingertips in the bottom right corner.

The Panthers looked to strike late in the first half, but Moore stood tall and took the steam off the ball making a rolling save just in front of the goal line in the 45th minute.

Shifting to a more aggressive style offensively, BSC fired off three shots in the first 10 minutes of the second half, but Moore helped orchestrate the Majors' defense beautiful to keep the score tied.

It seemed as if Millsaps was primed to take the lead when freshman Alexandra Murphy gained separation and found herself one-on-one with the goalkeeper in the 60th minute. However, her shot would be corralled by the keeper.

With the crowd falling anxious with time expiring, the Majors would find the back of the net when Martinez connected with Faraca in the waning moments of the regular season. Faraca launched a ball over the keeper's reach and into the back of the net with less than three minutes remaining for her first career tally.

The Majors will next travel to play in the SAA Tournament Quarterfinal. Seedings and times will be announced in the days ahead, but matches will take place on Saturday, Oct. 30. Live stats and video will be available at gomajors.com.
