Men’s Soccer Falls at Pensacola Christian on Tuesday

Sophomore Wilkins Dowdy Posted Seven Saves in 1-0 Defeat

PENSACOLA, Fla. – It was a goaltending battle between Millsaps men's soccer sophomore goalkeeper Wilkins Dowdy and Adam Lund of Pensacola Christian College on Tuesday. Dowdy posted seven saves, while Lund chipped in four stops as the Majors fell 1-0 at Eagle Field.

Pensacola Christian (5-9) of the NCCAA as the Division II level, outshot the Majors 21-11.

Four minutes into the match, Dowdy came out aggressively to challenge and made a great save covering the lower part of the net.

The best chance for the Majors to open the match came 7:30 minutes in when senior midfielder Ethan Brunet nearly connected on a header opportunity.

Pensacola Christian scored the lone goal of the match in the 15th minute when a failed clearance bounced off an Eagle attacker and landed directly at the foot on Angel Acosta. Acosta connected with his left and found the lower left corner.

With just under 18 minutes to play in the first half, the Eagles found another turnover, but Dowdy corralled a long, powerful shot.

In the opening minute of the second half, senior forward Sergey Kolesnik fired a chance that was collected by Lundy.

Less than five minutes later, sophomore midfielder Colby Armstrong controlled a beautiful cross and fired a strike that cracked off the left post.

A few moments followed when Armstrong received a beautiful touch pass, but his attempt was stopped with a swatting right hand.

A minute later, Dowdy provided his own sensational stop by diving left to right.

The Majors continued to press when Kolesnik took a shot from outside the box, looking for the low-right corner that was punched aside.

Action continued as Acosta found an opening two minutes after, but a sprawling Dowdy made another stop.

Millsaps blocked another great Eagles chance on the ensuing again, which eventually led to a PCC free kick right outside the box. The through ball found an attacker, which was stopped low by Dowdy.

Continuing his masterful work on the backline, Dowdy made an incredible sprawling fingertip save just in front of the left post with 20 minutes to play.

The final Major chance came in the 86th minute when Kolesnik took a shot that went wide right.

Millsaps will now face No. 1 seed Oglethorpe in the SAA Tournament Quarterfinal on Saturday. The match will begin at 11 a.m. CT with live stats and video available at gomajors.com.
