LONGVIEW, Texas – The Millsaps men's basketball fell behind early in the LeTourneau Classic, but were unable to muster a comeback, falling 69-52 to Schreiner University inside Solheim Arena on Friday.
Millsaps (1-2) outscored Schreiner (1-3), 30-29 in the second half but could not overcome 31 percent shooting from the floor (19-for-61).
The Majors did have strong contributions from the bench, outscoring the Mountaineers 31-14.
Freshman guard
Bryce Brown totaled 12 points in 16 minutes in relief. Sophomore wing
Cameron Williams nearly tallied a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.
Millsaps looked poised for a big night hitting its first two shots, a three-pointer by
Doug Watson and a jumper in the paint by Williams.
The Mountaineers regrouped and gained the lead at 9-8 with 16:02 remaining in the first, a lead they would never relinquish.
A
Nicholas Ughovwa jumper would cut the Millsaps deficit to 25-18, but Schreiner would surge ahead with a 15-0 run. Back-to-back made buckets by
Chandler Dyas and Williams would see the Majors trail 40-22 at the break.
A
Brock Brown three-pointer and
Christian Evans free throw make shrunk the Millsaps disadvantage to 10, down 54-44 with 5:15 to play. This is the closest the Majors would get in their comeback effort before Schreiner eventually claimed a 69-52 win.
Millsaps will conclude its appearance in the LeTourneau Classic by playing Texas Lutheran University on Saturday, with tip off scheduled for 3 p.m. Live video and stats links can be found on the men's basketball schedule page at gomajors.com.
