Cameron Williams’ Double-Double Buoys Men’s Basketball Past Texas Lutheran

Sophomore Tallied 20 Points and Career-High 16 Rebounds in Second-Half Comeback on Saturday

LONGVIEW, Texas – Millsaps men's basketball outlasted the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs in a 59-56 thriller in their second and final game at the LeTourneau Classic. Sophomore wing Cameron Williams recorded his second double-double of the season with 20 points and a career-high 16 rebounds in the come-from-behind victory at Solheim Arena on Saturday.

Freshman guard Bryce Brown also recorded double figures in scoring with 13 points on 6-of-7 from the free throw stripe.

In a game that featured nine lead changes and six ties, Millsaps (2-2) smothered the Bulldogs defensively. They held Texas Lutheran (1-3) to under 29 percent from the field and under 20 percent from beyond the arc.

In a back-and-forth affair, the Bulldogs entered intermission with a 28-25 edge.

A 6-0 burst by the Majors helped them reclaim a three-point lead to start the second half. A bucket by the Bulldogs would give them back the lead with 14:34 remaining at 34-33 in the tightly contested game.

Texas Lutheran would keep control of the lead for the majority of the half. A made free throw gave them their largest advantage of 10 points at 51-41 with 5:40 left in the second half.

A pair of free throws from Brown would be the start of 18-5 blitz to end the game. Millsaps gradually clawed their way back into the game with gritty play on both ends of the court. A jumper by Williams with 1:24 remaining gave the Majors their first lead since 33-32 with 15:07 left in the second.

On the Bulldogs following possession, sophomore center Aaron Ursin produced a huge block to preserve the 55-54 lead. The Majors would turn the ball over after the block and foul a Texas Lutheran team that was in the bonus. They would go on to sink both free throws and gain a one-point lead with 35 seconds left.

With the game on the line, Williams aggressively attacked the basket and missed the layup. With a quick second bounce, he corralled the offensive rebound and was immediately fouled and sent to the foul line for two free throws.

After Williams calmly made both shots and gave Millsaps the one-point advantage once again, Ursin came up clutch with another great defensive play by jumping a passing lane and intercepting the ball. He would then toss a lead pass to sophomore guard Christian Evans who scored for a three-point lead with 11 seconds left.

With one last chance for the Bulldogs to send the game into overtime with a three, Ursin blocked the three-point attempt as the buzzer sounded to secure a gutsy win by the Majors.

The Majors will look to start a winning streak when the team travels to nearby Clinton, Miss. and face Mississippi College on Wednesday, Nov. 13. Tip off is scheduled for 7 p.m., while live video and stats links can be found on the men's basketball schedule page at gomajors.com.
