CLINTON, Miss. – Millsaps men's basketball sophomore wing
Cameron Williams dropped game-highs of 21 points and six rebounds in a 79-60 loss at NCAA Division II Mississippi College on Wednesday. Freshman guard
Brock Brown also reached double figures with 11 points inside the A.E. Wood Coliseum.
In what was a two-point game at halftime, the Choctaws outscored the Majors 44-27 in the second half. Mississippi College (1-1) used a tall lineup to outscore the Majors 40-14 in the paint as well as 28-9 in fast break points.
Mississippi College raced to a 10-4 advantage following the first media timeout. With both teams trading baskets, a baseline jumper cut Millsaps' deficit to 24-22 with 7:35 remaining in the opening half. With neither teaming giving ground, a made layup by Brown in the waning seconds of the half would make the score 35-33 in favor of the Choctaws heading into halftime.
Mississippi College began the second half on a 10-2 flurry, which gave them their first double-digit lead at 45-35 with just over 17 minutes left. Showing resilience, two consecutive threes by Williams and junior guard
Doug Watson capped an 8-0 run to cut Mississippi College's lead to 45-43 with 14:20 left in the game.
As action picked up throughout the second half, the Choctaws found timely baskets to accompany solid defense and raised their lead to as much as 22 points en route to a 19-point victory in the crosstown matchup.
The Majors will next host the Millsaps College Tournament inside the Hangar Dome, Nov. 20-21. They will face Huntingdon on Saturday and an opponent TBD on Sunday.
