JACKSON, Miss. – A trio of student-athletes for No. 25 Millsaps women's basketball reached double figures in a 75-29 convincing victory of Agnes Scott inside the Hangar Dome on Saturday. The 46-point win was the largest triumph for the Majors since an 86-38 win over NAIA Rust College in Nov. 2008, and was the biggest victory against an NCAA D3 opponent since the 1998-99 season.
The Majors' bench outscored the Scotties, 37-9 and helped charge Millsaps to their highest point total of the season on Day One of the Millsaps Thanksgiving Classic.
Senior forward
Andrea Rayford tied a career-high 14 points while adding five rebounds and three assists. Second-year forward
Helena Roe was also a force in the paint. She tallied 12 points, three rebounds and a career-high three blocks.
Sophomore
Britney Bachemin powered the bench scoring with career-highs of 10 points and seven rebounds. Freshman guard
Emily Adams was everywhere and marked new career-highs with six rebounds, five steals and four assists as the floor general.
Millsaps (4-3) led from start to finish and dominated the points in the paint at 36-8. The Majors also held the Scotties to only 20.4 percent from the field and 10 percent from beyond the arc.
Agnes Scott (0-6) did not find their first basket until 4:33 remaining in the first quarter. A pair of free throws from
Emily Sims would give the Majors their first double digit lead right before the end the first quarter at 14-4.
The Scotties only travelled nine players, most of whom were freshmen. Millsaps used the Scotties' youth to their advantage by applying full-court pressure. Rayford would knock down a free throw to cap off a 15-0 run and push the Majors' lead to 24-4 midway through the second quarter. Majors would ultimately extend their lead to 33-12 heading into the intermission.
The Majors dominated the third quarter by a count of 22-7, which prompted them going deeper into the bench for more minutes. Millsaps would not miss a beat in the fourth quarter with the lead reaching as much as 46 points for a final score of 75-29.
Millsaps 46 points was the largest margin of victory against an NCAA Division III school since early in the 1998-99 season. Dating back 23 seasons, the Majors downed the same Agnes Scott program by 54 points (72-18).
The Majors will be in action again on Sunday for their second and final game of the Millsaps Thanksgiving Classic inside the Hangar Dome. They will face the University of Dallas with tip scheduled for 3 p.m. Live video and stats links are available on the women's basketball schedule page at gomajors.com.
