Millsaps Battles Huntingdon to the Wire, Falls in Season Opener

Sophomore Cameron Williams Tallied 19 Points and 7 Boards in 65-61 Defeat

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Millsaps men's basketball All-Conference sophomore wing Cameron Williams posted a team-high 19 points and seven rebounds in a season-opening 65-61 loss to Huntingdon College. The Majors held Huntingdon to 28 percent shooting (19-for-66) from the field, but fell at Catherine Dixon Roland Arena on Friday.
 
In a game where both teams were statistically similar, Huntingdon (1-0) made the difference from beyond the arc. The Hawks outshot the Majors 25.7 percent (9-35) to 20 percent (4-20). Huntingdon also outshot Millsaps (0-1) from the free-throw line, 18-for-22 compared to 19-for 28.
 
Freshman point guard Brock Brown was solid in his collegiate debut. He cracked double figures with 10 points.
 
Sophomore guard Christian Evans also provided a spark with a team-high seven rebounds to go with his eight points, several of which came late.
 
Both teams exhibited great defensive prowess, with neither team cracking double digits until 11:32 remaining in the first half.
 
Trailing 16-12, the Majors would anchor down and swarm Huntingdon with a 16-5 run the final six minutes to take a 28-21 lead into the intermission.
 
The Hawks would swiftly reclaim a 31-28 lead with three consecutive threes and a free throw to begin the second half.
 
The aggressive play remained at a high level throughout the game with both teams reaching the bonus with over 10 minutes remaining.
 
With the game tied at 50-50 at the the under eight minute media timeout, the Hawks gained separation with a pair of threes and free throws for an eight-point advantage.
 
Millsaps would cut a seven-point deficit to three with 2:42 remaining with back-to-back buckets from Williams and Evans.
 
Following a technical foul and made free throw from Huntingdon, Evans knocked down two free throws to make it a two-point game with one minute remaining.
 
After a valiant defensive effort from the Majors, they had 19 seconds to tie or take the lead. An iso from Williams would end with a floater in the paint hitting the back iron and off the rim. The Hawks would ice the game with two made free throws with two seconds left to claim a 65-61 victory in the season opener.
