JACKSON, Miss. – A strong first half and pair of outstanding efforts by sophomore Doug Williams and freshman
Cameron Williams of the Millsaps men's basketball team was not enough to hold off Rhodes College on Saturday inside the Hangar Dome. The Majors fell to the Lynx, 63-60.
Millsaps (1-6, 1-6 SAA) was powered by
Watson's career-high 25 points, five three-pointers and a perfect 8 of 8 from the free-throw line. He was joined in the double-digit scoring column by
Williams (18 points, eight rebounds).
Midway through the first quarter, a 16-8 Millsaps gave the Majors an early lead at 21-13. Freshman guard
Christian Evans grabbed a steal and threw down a thunderous dunk during the sequence
After leading 35-28 at halftime, the Majors were outscored 35-25. Rhodes (1-6, 1-6 SAA) made it a point of emphasis to attack the paint, winning up close by a margin of 28-14.
The Lynx did not take their first lead of the game until 8:32 in the second half when the score was 52-50. After a back-and-forth contest in the final eight minutes of the game, Rhodes took the lead for good after a made three-point basket by Koki Wiley with 1:12 left at 62-60.
Following a Rhodes free throw, Millsaps had two chances to tie the game from long range, but came up just short.
