Birmingham-Southern Sweeps Men’s Basketball on Friday and Saturday

Majors Pushed Back by Panthers, 75-67 in Game One and 85-71 in Game Two

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Millsaps men's basketball team battled tough but came up just short in a pair of games at Birmingham-Southern on Friday and Saturday at the Bill Battle Coliseum. Millsaps (1-8, 1-8 SAA) fell in Game One, 75-67, while Birmingham-Southern (11-5, 6-4 SAA) claimed Game Two, 85-71.

GAME 1 RECAP

A slow start for Millsaps proved too much to come back against on Friday night at Bill Battle Coliseum. The Majors fell to the Panthers, 75-67.

A total of four Majors scored double figures. Freshman standout Cameron Williams led the way with 15 points and eight rebounds. Senior guard Joshua Miller added 14 points and four assists. Christian Evans and Newlon Gillihan each chipped in 11 points to add to the final total for the Majors.

The biggest difference between the two teams came from the bench with the Panthers outscoring the Majors, 38-13.

Leading by eight at halftime, the Panthers were able to stretch their lead to 13 points at the 16:21 mark. Fighting their way back, Millsaps cut the lead to one point at 55-54 off a Drew Burnett lay-up with 6:33 remaining in the game. This would prove to be the closest the Majors would get to reclaiming the lead as the Panthers would use a 12-1 run to catapult them to victory.

GAME 2 RECAP

The Majors fell to Birmingham Southern in the finale of the two-game weekend series, 85-71 on Saturday afternoon.

Williams once again had another stellar performance with a career-high 24 points, while adding seven rebounds. Freshman Dylan Dimitrios went a perfect 5-for-5 from the field and 4-for-5 from the free throw line to also net a career-high 15 points. Miller had a good all-around game for the Majors with a stat line of 11 points, four assists, and three rebounds.

Keeping up with the theme of the first game in the weekend series, the Panthers dominated the points off the bench at 40-12.

A made three-point jumper from Drew Burnett with 17:35 remaining cut the Panthers lead down to five at 46-41. This would be the closest the Majors would get to tying and retaking the lead the rest of the way.
