ATLANTA – Millsaps baseball sophomore pitcher
Wil Wood was nearly unhittable in his opening start against No. 25 Hendrix on Saturday. The lefty's efforts were recognized across the league as he was named the SAA Baseball Pitcher of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.
Wood kept the Majors in the game long enough for them to secure a 2-0 win over a ranked opponent. The Memphis, Tenn., product pitched five scoreless innings, striking out six Warrior batters, while surrendering just two hits and two walks.
The Majors would break through to score a run in the seventh and eighth innings on their way to victory.
The business administration major did not show any signs of rust following an impressive 2020 rookie campaign. Wood made a team-high seven starts on the mound for the Majors in a pandemic-shortened season. He finished with a team-best 28.1 total innings pitched and led the Majors with 21 strikeouts.
Millsaps returns to Twenty Field to host Rhodes, Feb. 20-21 for a pair of doubleheaders. Both days are scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. CT with the second game starting at 3 p.m. Live stats and live video will be available on the baseball schedule page at gomajors.com.
