JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps women's soccer program finally returns to action after 15 months with a new head coach and eight returners with starting experience, beginning a new era for the 2021 spring season.
Head coach
Courtney Murdoch will be entering her first season at the helm of the Majors. She was hired in February 2020 and most recently served as an assistant coach at Texas Southern University. Prior to that, she made stops at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell as goalkeepers coach and held multiple roles in the Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL).
On the field, the Majors welcome back ten players with extensive starting experience from their 2019 team. Two of those returning players were named to the 2019 All-SAA Team, including defender
Heather Hembree and goalkeeper
Maddie Moore.
Hembree started and played in all 16 games last fall. The most durable player, she amassed a team-high 1,308 minutes.
Moore started in 10 games and appeared in 12. In 2019, she accumulated 94 saves with a 74 percent save percentage.
Offensively, the Majors are spearheaded by a triple threat of scorers in
Hannah Johnson (three goals, one assist),
Mary Ranager (two goals, two assists) and
Alexi Martinez (two goals).
The Majors began the season hosting Spring Hill on Feb. 27. Millsaps will next travel to MUW (March 6), Rhodes (March 13), Hendrix (March 20) and Centre (March 28).
Women's soccer will conclude the regular season with three home games against Birmingham-Southern (April 3), Berry (April 9) and Oglethorpe (April 11). Conference supremacy will be on the line as the top-four teams will compete in the SAA Tournament, April 16 and 18.
