DANVILLE, Ky. – The Millsaps softball team's season came to an end at the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Tournament on Friday following a pair of defeats. At Centre College softball field, the Majors fell, 7-1 to No. 10 Berry and then were downed by Rhodes, 14-0 in five innings in an elimination game.
GAME ONE: 1-7 (vs. Berry)
The No. 10-nationally ranked and No. 2-seeded Berry Vikings (24-6) jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings to put the Majors in an early hole.
The Majors were stifled offensively and managed one hit in the first three frames, which came off the bat of senior
Mattie Taliaferro.
Junior
Emily Cook then singled up the middle with two outs in the fourth to attempt a comeback. Cook was retired during the next at-bat on a fielder's choice. The Vikings then responded with two more runs in the bottom of the inning to build a 7-0 advantage.
With runners on the corners and nobody out, relief pitcher
Hannah Derouen escaped the situation with a double play at third and an ensuing ground out to limit any further runs. Derouen finished 2021 as All-SAA Honorable Mention.
Fresh off her record-setting regular season, freshman
Molli Perry continued her prowess on the basepaths in the sixth inning. She set the Millsaps softball steals record with 26 after stealing second following a one-out single on Friday. Perry also posted the second most in SAA regular-season conference games with 16. Teammate and fellow All-SAA Second Team nominee
Lindsey Osbon doubled Perry home to put Millsaps on the board.
The Majors looked poised to cut further into the deficit after a leadoff single and walk in the seventh but were unable to add any more tallies on the scoreboard.
GAME TWO: 0-14, 5 innings (vs. Rhodes)
Millsaps (12-14) could never find its footing after a short break between games, falling to Rhodes (17-17), 14-0 in five innings in an elimination game.
The Lynx used four home runs to great effect offensively and held the Majors to two hits. Rhodes scored one run in the first inning, six in the third and seven in the seventh to put the run-rule into play.
Junior
Kat Reeves and senior
Jordan Lipari both recorded hits for Millsaps. Lipari was also named to the All-SAA Second Team. Her classmate
Leslie Norris, who tallied a walk in the game, was the final Major to earn All-Conference as an Honorable Mention student-athlete.
